Built by the Spanish friars sometime in 1894, the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral wows tourists and visitors of its magnificence.
History says that the original altar of the cathedral was designed by Philippines’ national hero, Dr. Jose Protacio Rizal during his exile in Dapitan. The sketch of the altar was believed to be inspired by that of San Ignacio Church in Manila.
The Holy Rosary Cathedral is the center where masses and the Holy Eucharist are regularly celebrated. Processions such as the dawn rosary are observed by devotees.
The cathedral was built in honor of Our Lady of Holy Rosary who has been the patroness of the city. Not long ago, during the cholera epidemic in 1903, the Dipolognons also started putting themselves under the care and devotion of Saint Vincent Ferrer, in addition to Our Lady of Holy Rosary.
Since its establishment, the Holy Rosary Cathedral of Dipolog has undergone various renovations. What you see today is the newly renovated altar built with marbles. Despite its modern look, the altar retains its original form. Old but not worn-out, traditional but not antiquated, that is how we describe the Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral in Dipolog.
